Working from home and staying fit…

Working from home sure has its glory, but it does require hard core self discipline. And I don’t mean just disciplining yourself to work; but to keep fit as well. I was inspired to write this post on a recent day where I had no desire but to work with my laptop on the couch for most of the day. Granted, I’m pregnant, but still, I have no excuse not to keep my fitness regime in tact. It does help chasing a toddler around, but on the days when she’s in daycare, I am prone to staying at this thing (computer) all day long.

When working from home, we don’t have the luxury of taking walks with our co-workers at lunch or utilizing the building’s free gym facilities. In fact, it’s quite easy to convince oneself that you promise to exercise later…as soon as you have that project done. But then the project is done, and you’re pooped and all you want to do is veg out in front of the tv with a cold drink and a snack. “I deserve to relax,” you tell yourself. But you also deserve to take good care of your body.

All you need is just 30 minutes a day. Here are some ideas on what you can do to stay fit:

  • Take a walk in your neighborhood during lunch break or when the dog needs to go out. Brisk walking for 15-30 minutes to start can do wonders for your body.
  • Buy or rent an exercise DVD/video and get a complete workout in the comfort of your livingroom for just 30 minutes.
  • Have hand and/or leg weights nearby your desk and lift them as you read your emails.
  • Stretch often during the day.

Why is it so important? Being active throughout the day and acquiring a 30-minute workout regime can help you:

  • Increase concentration.
  • Increase productivity.
  • Avoid feeling sluggish, which is akin to having a hard time getting work done.
  • Avoid getting into the habit of parking your rear at the desk and not getting up all day as you work.
  • Be less prone to eating unhealthily.
  • Boost your immune system. Can’t work when you’re sick, right?

Keeping fit makes you feel good, and when you feel good, you work harder and more effectively!
