I run the Freelancers Meetup.com group in Pittsburgh, and was wondering about your take on contracts. Do you have a contract with every employer you freelance for? Is it the same generic contract for each one? Who initiated the contract?
I’m preparing an event with a speaker to talk to our group about the basics of contracts and the bare minimum needed to protect yourself. Any insight you could provide would be great.
Thanks.
P.S. I also recently asked you about http://www.izimundi.com but I can’t recall where I posted my questions. Have you ever had success with izimundi?
Pittsburgh, eh? I’ll have to make an appearance at one of these meetings.
As for izimundi, nearly every page says opening or coming soon. Can’t really have success with something that isn’t quite open yet.
Hi Catine, thank you for your post! To answer your questions regarding freelance contracts - while I did not have a contract for every job I did in the past, now I make certain to have a contract due to issues such as client failing to pay, client disagreeing with the price we verbally agreed on, etc. Thankfully, I’ve only come across those kind of situations once or twice. Running my own business, it is crucial for me to have contracts with every job I do, according to my accountant and business associates. With every freelance job/job through my business I obtain, I initiate the contract. I have one that is branded through my business, and it seems to cover all of the bases. I’ve been using it for over a year, and have made frequent changes based on experience, and now I think I have it up to par. Of course, I have not had an actual attorney review it, but it works for me and my small business now. I understand that some freelance jobs are done according to the person hiring for one, so it is likely that they would want to draw up the contract. But because most of my customers go through my business, I draw up the agreement. If I go after freelance jobs myself, I’ll wait to see what that person hiring says in regards to a project. Sorry if this is lengthy, and I hope I’ve made sense.
I’ve looked at izimundi too briefly, but was not aware of it until now. I will have to continue to look into it however, and will keep you posted of my findings!
I’m not a Telecommuter at the moment, but the office BS is making the grass seem greener. I’ve been skimming the site for a while and am trying set all my ducks in a row to possibly be ready to make the leap.
Thanks for the site.
Chris
