Types of Popular Work from Home Businesses

So you’re thinking of starting your own work from home business, but not sure what industry to start in? While there are many work from home opportunities out there, be aware of the scams. Extensive researching on companies and websites will help you to steer clear of such dangers. Consult with the Better Business Bureau as well as the Federal Trade Commission to be of more help in this area as well.

So, what kinds of work from home businesses are making it big these days? Here is a list I’ve compiled to get your creative juices flowing:

1.) Online Marketing - Becoming an affiliate with a company can prove to be quite profitable without any significant start up costs. To run this type of work from home job, one will need to possess knowledge about computers and setting up quality websites. After all, the more appealing the website, the more traffic it will earn and the more sales it will generate.

2.) Selling Products and Services - Plenty of people who work from home invest little or no cost into opening their own storefront. Companies like Ebay provide numerous incentives and pretty much anything can be marketed on the hundreds of websites out there.

3.) Company Representatives - Many work from home moms choose this option - to work as a representative for companies such as Avon, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Discovery Toys, and more. There is no investment required for most companies, and a commission is offered on products sold. Selling and people experience required — if you don’t sell, you don’t make money!

4.) Financial Coach - As a wealth coach, you can help clients reach their financial goals, discussing with them how to make money, increase their savings, and spend less. Work with them to help them reduce debt and manage their money better. Clients can include small businesses, organizations, charities, schools, and individuals. If finances are not your forte, maybe you could coach others in other areas - cooking, housecleaning (think FlyLady), or even personal life coaching.

5.) Consultants - Many consultants nowadays work from the privacy of their own homes. Simply put, a consultant is someone who possesses more knowledge on a subject matter than his or her client. Additionally, the consultant has the ability to identify where to find that knowledge. If you are particularly educated or resourceful in a certain area, use it to your advantage!

6.) Virtual Publicists - If you have substantial experience in promotions, event planning, writing, pitching, media contact management, crisis communications, or strategic planning, consider starting your own virtual public relations firm.

7.) Online Tutors - Again, this is an area where subject knowledge comes in very useful. If you have expertise in English, math, science, or social studies, you can make money as an online tutor if you’ve graduated from college in the U.S. or in Canada, and/or if you are a current student at an accredited school.

8.) Writers - Freelance writers are always needed - in fact, I’m looking for one for my company right now! If you are creative, resourceful, and have a way with words, turn this talent into your career!

9.) Web/Graphic Designers - Telecommuting web and graphic designers are consistently popular with the ever-increasing demand of Internet marketing needs from businesses and individuals all over the world.

10.) Photographers - Maybe it’s your hobby, but it can be your livelihood, too. It will take more than an eye for picture-taking though - running your own work from home photography business requires one to also be a savvy businessperson.

The list does not end here! There are so many work from home business ideas out there that really work for hundreds of thousands of people. Let yourself be one of them. On Friday, we’ll explore some popular work from home myths.
