Top 5 Home-Business Mistakes

You’re in business! And to make it even better, it’s a business you have the advantage of running from home. In order to make sure you are doing everything correctly, or to assess if a home business could work for you, take heed of the following top five mistakes that home-based business owners make.

1. Attempting to start a business that realistically won’t “fit” in your home. It’s a fact - not all businesses can succeed in a home-based location. It requires assessing certain equipment, workable, ample work and storage space, employee need, etc. Be realistic about what your home can handle.

2. Not being motivated enough. Are you prone to being easily distracted? Is it hard for you to really sit down and work in your home when there are a million other things you could be doing? (watching tv, doing laundry, gardening, etc.) Running a home-based business requires you to set certain schedules for working that you NEED to keep and stick to.

3. Not having enough room to grow. If you needed to expand your business (and who wouldn’t? Expanding means more money), would your home be able to accommodate the extra equipment or an employee or two?

4. Over spending. Simply put, far too many business owners justify spending money on all sorts of equipment because they don’t have the overhead of a typical business located outside of the home. In a lot of cases, these people overspend.

5. Not promoting your company. Failing to get out there and promote your business could be detrimental to its future success. You have to get out of your home sometimes to network, attend conferences, and other industry events.
