More Home Business Mistakes

In continuing my previous post on the top mistakes home business owners can make, here are a few more of which to take note. The following are mistakes to avoid if you are already in business from home, or if you plan to start one in the future.

1. Failing to have a client-friendly environment. In a lot of home business cases, there is a need to invite clients to come to your office location. With that, a great number of home business owners have had to make excuses for their house, children, pets, and even the outside walkway before sitting down to meet with the clients. Avoid the excuses by escorting your client directly into the office portion of the house and keep all conversations focused on the business only. (If you can help it.)

2. Not having the proper technology set-up. Your home office should be technologically advanced at least to the point where your office computer is not networked to the home computer where your teenagers may be hogging valuable bandwidth downloading music or games. Try to keep your equipment updated and as “state-of-the-art” as possible.

3. Not knowing zoning laws for your neighborhood. If you have a discreet business, it’s likely you need not worry about zoning laws. However, at the very least you should know about any of them that may affect you and your home-based business.

4. Mixing the “home” too much into your office. One of the reasons you may have decided to work from home is to be with the family more. However, you should have a separate office space and set ground rules so that you can work effectively even as other activities are taking place in your home.

5. Not having a business plan. I kick myself each time I read about this one, because a year and a half into my own business, we still don’t have a proper business plan. But that is changing as we continue to make progress on it. In any case, know that a home-based business needs a business plan because it needs to be taken as seriously as a business outside of the home. Not many businesses thrive without a good business plan.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and “see” you Monday!
