Line Up New Clients for the New Year

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday! With the New Year only a few days away, what is on a lot of our minds is making 2008 a great year for business. Whether you are running your own work from home business, or if you are seeking to leave your job to become a freelancer, one thing is for sure - there is plenty of work out there waiting to be found.

In anticipation of the upcoming year, keep these ideas on lining up new clients close by:

1.) Harness the power of “word of mouth.” Have your family and friends spread the word about the services you offer. Let it be known to your current clients that you are accepting new referrals - and if you can afford it, offer them an incentive for each client you gain. Send out an email to everyone in your address book - personal or business - explaining what you do, where you are, and everything you can offer.

2.) Don’t forget the clients you already have. Get in touch with clients you work with presently, or have worked with in the past and offer them a new or discounted service. Start an email newsletter to make new announcements about your business/services. Consider sending this out on a monthly basis.

3.) Get yourself out there. Plan to go to industry events, such as conferences, association meetings, and seminars. When you go, network with other professionals, making sure to leave your business cards everywhere. Consider joining your local Chamber of Commerce and/or some social groups such as through your church, school, or library.

4.) Promote yourself as much as you can. Obviously you already have, or plan to get business cards. But what about a magnet for your car? Or a t-shirt with your URL? If you have the budget, considering trying location based Google Adwords or advertising in a niche magazine or trade publication. You can even try researching sites your clients or potential clients frequently visit and buy advertising there. Utilize your website to its maximum advantage - post online specials, your work portfolio, and interesting, relevant content that will entice visitors to the site to return.

5.) Use the media. In the prior posting, I mentioned press release writing. Write, or have someone write, a great press release on your business, and submit it to every media outlet you possibly can - first targeting the area in which you hope to pick up the most clients. In future postings, we’ll go into more detail on more ways to utilize the media for your business.

6.) Keep coming back to The Daily Telecommuter! With new freelance/telecommuter jobs posted five times a week, you are bound to find some new clients and work for the New Year!

Happy New Year, all!
