Home-Based Business Do’s
If you are thinking of or have already started a career that allows you to work from home, keep in mind the following DO’s:
1.) If anything ever sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Do your research on work-at-home opportunities very carefully, and pay special mind to articles that focus on helping you avoid home business scams.
2.) Do what makes you happy. Check out books and Web sites that offer lists of home-business ideas to see if others have been successful doing what you’d like to do.
3.) Consider obtaining additional training to proceed with home-based business.
4.) Do a self-assessment. Make a determination whether you have the right kind of personality to successfully work at home. Are you self-disciplined? Are you assertive enough to sell your product or service? 5.) Know what to expect with a home-based career. Check out home-based career message boards or online discussion forums where you can get a feel for what you might be getting yourself into.
6.) If you have little ones around, devise a plan for caring for and managing them while you work at home. Check out websites such as Mompreneurs® Online, BizyMoms.com, Jobs and Moms, Home-Based Working Moms, and 4 Work At Home Mothers.
7.) Calculate what it will cost you to work at home, and determine if you can afford it. Some things to consider are health insurance, marketing costs, equipment, and self-employment taxes.
8.) Designate appropriate workspace in your home and assess what equipment you’ll need, such as another phone line, fax machine, computer, printer, and office chair.
9.) Get help when you need it, especially for business aspects that may not be your strength - accounting, legal advice, and your computer infrastructure.
10.) Market, market, market yourself - make prospective customers aware of what you have to bring to the table.
