Here I am…your new blogger

Good evening all! It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself to you tonight as the proud new blogger for The Daily Telecommuter (DT). My name is Karissa, and I am most excited to be here. I know I was with great company as I applied for this gig – Steve let me know about the several responses he got to the ad. And I know choosing the blogger was a hard decision for him to make because of all the simply amazing talent that is out there. Kudos to all of you…

Daily Telecommuter is a fabulous website for all those who work from home, or aspire to work from home. I have been with this website since it was, and it is by far the best resource for telecommuting jobs and gigs that you will find online.

To me, it is an absolute blessing to have the chance to work for myself, out of the comfort of my own home. In fact, it is a blessing that both my husband and I share – he telecommutes as Logistics Coordinator for a South American manufacturer; and I am owner of a very small marketing and design business, as well as a freelance writer. Being able to work from home together is a major plus. We have two home offices, and one out-of-home office, which I use to hold client meetings, and to work alongside my business partners a couple days a week.

The decision to work for myself was made upon the birth of my beautiful daughter (now nearly 20 months old). I was then working full-time for a software company, and while I was allowed to telecommute from time to time, it was not enough for me. I needed to be home with my baby on my terms, not my company’s. I left my position there, and began doing some freelance marketing and writing projects for a couple people I know here in town. My best friend, a graphic designer, began to work alongside me. Like me, she is a mother to a young child, and enjoys the opportunity to work from home, as well as escape to our leased office from time to time for client meetings or to work alongside me.

Within only a few months of the birth of my daughter, I had more freelance work and a growing list of clients. With this, my friend and I were able to officially become a business, and we called it Creative Insight Design of CT. I still take on several freelance projects, some of whom turn into regular, full time clients. I have a long way to go, but I am getting there. And I am totally enjoying my freedom doing so.

So, enough about me. Let’s get to you. Why are you here? What are you hoping to accomplish? What is your inspiration to work from home? In what ways has this website helped you? Through this blog, we here at Daily Telecommuter hope to reach out to the growing number of you who are working, or aspiring to work from home.

I will be writing about all sorts of topics pertaining to this incredible experience. You’ll come to know me very well, and I hope to get to know you, too. Send in your stories, your thoughts, your experiences working from home. Or, if you are not a telecommuter, tell us why you want to be one, and what led you to this point. I will always welcome your questions, your ideas, your comments.

Thanks so much for having me. Make sure to visit often to scope out new jobs, and of course, the new blog!

  7. Hi! Holidays were great and I would love to know if anyone has suggestions or websites to search on that list companies that are “telecommute” friendly or allow you to work from home. I have been working from home p/t with a legit company however, it’s sales based. My family cannot rely on the ever-changing income of a sales position so I am on the hunt! I would love to hear others ideas on how to make my vision a reality.

Thanks so much and Happy New Year to all!
