How He Picked His Niche:

I decided on a niche (RTBV) by thinking about what I am passionate about, and have some knowledge about. Being a dietary vegan fit the bill. What I didn’t really consider carefully enough is how to monetize such a site and more importantly, just how difficult it can be to write on the subject of diet and nutrition. This site is a LOT of work and makes very little income. I mean VERY little.

With KTLC it is a different story. I put the site up six weeks before product launch and had great traffic and some nice sales, until I fell off the face of Google. I decided on this niche by seeing the opportunity in an already-proven line of products (Kindle) and moving that forward to a soon-to-be hot product. Gold mine! But it has VERY high competition so when I say ‘gold mine’ I mean that I put in hard work, and find a few bits of precious material inside of my efforts.

Experience Before Wealthy Affiliate:

My internet marketing experience before joining WA was limited. I had tried some in 2008 using PPC and article marketing. I had what some would call success, but I saw as a failure. You see, I had been taught that it was possible to earn money but I was not taught how to do it without spending all of my earnings. This is where WA is different. I learned right away how to make money without spending much more than one trip to TGI Friday’s. I must say, the amount of money I was paying for my other training was less, but the education was limited at best. I didn’t survive it. Now, being a member of Wealthy Affiliate I learn more and more everyday and every roadblock I come to I find friends ready and waiting to help me build a ramp of knowledge over the top.

Words of Advice:

What I would say to any beginners, and I know it is hammered into everyone’s heads already, is to TAKE ACTION. Don’t think and wonder. Don’t over-analyze and over-plan. Do things. Even if it is a mistake, it probably isn’t going to end your marketing career. One misstep among dozens, even hundreds, of good steps will be like a drop in the bucket. Always learn. Always actively promote your site/blog/product every day. This is work, not an ATM.

Work hard. Learn daily. Earn satisfaction.

When considering getting into making money on the internet, it is important to remember you are not alone. There are thousands of others doing what you are doing. In order to do it better than they do, you need to have the right tools. In this business your tools are your knowledge. I have looked around for a long time to find real ways to make a living online, and until IveTriedThat.com crossed my path, I never found anything that worked. Instant Cash Sweepstakes is a market research business that will reward you for taking part in short online polls. Every poll consists of three questions and takes only a few seconds to complete. The polls are a mix between member created questionnaires and polls created by businesses interested in seeing answers from a specific demographic. You can take part in up to 5 polls every three hours.

The easiest way to make money is to just keep taking the polls. You can randomly be selected to win a handful of change at the end of each poll. (Another bonus tip: consistency in your answers will also allow you to take more polls per 3-hour block, so be honest!) The polls are fun and they’re a great way to kill some time during the day if you get bored. You just need to log in and remember to take them!

Clixsense pays you to look at ads and websites. All you have to do is click on a link, look at a website, wait a few seconds, and you’ll get money deposited into your account. This is probably the easiest way to make money on this list. As you can expect, it doesn’t pay as well as the others, but it’s still a great way to make some extra money in your spare time. If you join Clixsense, I highly recommend upgrading to the Premium Level. This will allow you to view hundreds more ads and will quickly pay for itself. Remember to refer your friends and family. Just think how many times per day you use a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Google.com used to be my home page, but I switched it to Swagbucks after I joined. I’m getting the exact same search results, only now I’m slowly making money by doing so.

What is PaidViewpoint.com?

Yes, it’s an online survey company, but it’s unlike any survey site I’ve seen before. I’ll let PaidViewpoint.com explain…

PaidViewpoint is the market research survey site built upon 4 principles:

• We pay cash for every completed market research survey.
• We never screen you out once you’ve been invited into a survey.
• We’ve cracked the code that takes “boring” out of the survey answering experience.
• Privacy – we never ask you to register your real name or complete physical address.

The most important thing to take away from those four points is the second line. Once you’re invited to take a survey, you will get paid no matter what. The biggest complaint with online survey companies is that a user will be halfway through an hour long survey just to find out he or she “doesn’t qualify” and is subsequently kicked out of the survey with no pay. That DOES NOT happen at PaidViewpoint.com. An invitation to a survey means you’re going to get paid.

You also get paid in CASH for completing a survey. No points or gift cards, but actual money. There is a $15.00 minimum withdraw though. I haven’t yet hit that amount of money, but I will keep you guys updated on how much I make there.

Lastly, we have their privacy commitment. You don’t have to give out your name or home address when signing up, but you do have to call in and verify a phone number in order to cash out your earnings. This is for two reasons: 1. An Example Survey

While working on this review, I was actually invited to participate in a survey. I decided to grab a screenshot to demonstrate how the site works and funcitons.

There are a few things I want to point out. First, we have the earnings bar at the top. This tallies up how much money you’ve earned so far during the survey. Since you can’t get “screened out” of a survey, that money is yours. Off to the right of the survey is how much money this particular question will earn for you. In this case, I earned $0.05 for answering this question.

Next we have the question/answer window. The first black bar is the question that’s being asked with the options below. Pick an option, then click on the arrow to continue to the next question. Finally, we have the time estimation bar at the bottom. This shows you approximately how close you are to the end of the survey. This is a great feature since other survey sites generally keep you in the dark about how much time is left.

Overall, I like PaidViewpoint.com. If you’re a fan of InstantCashSweepstakes, you’re going to love PaidViewpoint. The two programs compliment each other nicely and both are legitimate ways to make some extra money online.

The easier the work is to do, the less you’ll get paid.

Just think about this for a minute. There’s no (legal) business out there that will have you making tens of thousands of dollars in a matter of weeks with little or no effort. If it was that easy to get rich online, everyone would be doing it, there’d be no recession, and sadness, strife, and unemployment would be wiped from this Earth.

The absolute easiest way to protect yourself online is to simply ask yourself: “is this too good to be true?” If someone’s promising you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars per day (Yes, I’ve seen thousands being offered) and it’s not quite clear what you’d be doing to make that money, you can bet it’s not worth your time.

I’ve broken down the three most common ways of warning money online. As you can see, the harder the job, the more money you can make doing it. The Internet does mimic real life after all.

Little Work, Little Pay

Examples here: Online Surveys, “Get Paid to…” Sites

These types of sites pay little for a minimum amount of work. It’s not brain surgery, so don’t expect to get paid as such. These types of sites are great to supplement your income in your spare time. Instead of playing Famville on Facebook, spend some time answering surveys or viewing ads.

The key point here is: don’t expect anything that’s easy to do to become your primary source of income. It’s just never going to happen. Also, don’t fall for anything that’s labelled “push button” or “copy and paste easy.” If it’s easy work, it’s not going to pay much. Always remember that.

Moderate Work, Moderate Pay

Examples here: Work at Home and Telecommuting Jobs

The work in this category is more along the lines of a traditional job, with the exception being, you work from home. You’ll be working for a company and you’ll have a boss, set hours, a salary, and all the normal expectations of a job. The work isn’t going to be terribly difficult and you’ll get paid a modest amount of money.

There is a lot of competition in this category as there are more and more people turning to the Internet each day to find work. If you’re looking for more of something you can do entirely on your own and dictate when you work, what you make, and more, then…

A Ton of Work, (Possibility for) A Ton of Pay

Examples here: Internet and Affiliate Marketing

This one is interesting, because it focuses on building your own business. Unlike the first two examples where you get paid for doing work, there aren’t really any guarantees here. This is why I included “Possibility for” in parentheses above. With an online job like Internet Marketing, you aren’t necessarily being hired to do anything. You’d be building a business on your own.

There is a lot of work to be done when starting your own online business, and it could take a while before you see any returns. Personally, it took me about two years of doing Internet Marketing before I reached a level where I was comfortable living off of my earnings as a marketer alone. Today, I make much more money than I ever would have if I accepted a job straight out of college. It’s been an absolute ton of work every step of the way, but what I have now has been entirely worth it.

The easier the work is to do, the less you’ll get paid. Always keep this in mind. This may be the Internet, but it’s still governed by the laws of real-life. Easy, high-paying work just doesn’t exist out there.

How to Make Money Online with your Own Internet Marketing Business.

It’s what I consider my full-time job.

I hate using the term marketing. It conjures up scary thoughts of sales people, cold calling advertisements, just negative things overall. Hang on! Stick with me. What I do has nothing to do with any of that.

I create websites (Keep reading! Trust me!) People find my sites through Google or Yahoo read what I write and if they click on one of the ads on my website, I make money. It can be very lucrative or it can simply be used to earn a part-time income depending on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it.

What is it?

I want to give a quick example of basic Internet Marketing and show you how you’re already familiar with it.

Let’s say your old TV broke and you want to buy a fancy new 60 inch flat panel TV. You head to Google, and start researching which TV is the best value for your money. One of the search results is a review of the new Samsung Mindblower 5000. After you finish reading the review, you click on a link that takes you to the TV for sale at Amazon and you make a purchase.

The person who originally wrote the review and provided you with that link will make a commission on your purchase. Let’s say the price of the new TV is $2,500 and the reviewer makes 6% commission on each sale. The reviewer just made an easy $150 off of ONE review only. There is a lot of room out there for anyone to make a lot of money. Now, this is just one small example and Internet Marketing is by no means limited to reviewing TVs and Amazon.

When you become an Internet Marketer, you get to be the person who writes the reviews, gets people to visit your site, and then receives commissions from retailers like Amazon for sending customers their way.

This is basically how I’ve been working full-time from home for over a year now. I follow trends and provide people with the information they’re looking for.

You’ll be watching search engines like Google and Yahoo to find out what people are searching for and then you’ll write articles or create websites to help these people find what they are looking for.

How YOU Make Money

Above all, Internet Marketing is about HELPING people. Your job will be to help people find the information they’re searching for online. You’ll be creating websites (you probably don’t know how to do this yet, but keep reading because I’ll explain) and when people come to your website and click on your ads or make a purchase at an affiliated website, you’ll make money. The amount of money you make will vary depending on the affiliate program you’re partnered with.

It costs absolutely no money to affiliate with a company. You’re promoting THEIR products, they pay you! The best part of all of this is that you’re not responsible for taking orders, shipping items, providing customer service, etc. Your job is to get people to click on your affiliate links. You still give people what they want and you get a paid. It’s win-win.

There are some expenses involved…

Ah, the phrase no one wants to hear.

I imagine there are going to be some people who immediately say “it costs money therefore it’s a scam.” You’re starting a business. You need to invest some money first. I can’t think of a single (legal) business that you can start without putting up some money up-front. If you know of one, please leave me a comment below. I’ve racked my brain and I can’t think of anything.

If you want to become an Internet Marketer, there are a few things you have to pay for. First, if you have no prior experience, you’re going to have to pay for training. You need someone to teach you the ropes and show you what you need to do.

The point I like to make is you want to start your own online business right? Starting your own business, whether it’s online or offline, requires SOME investment. If you wanted to start your own brick and mortar store, just think of the expenses you’d face. There’s rent, supplies, equipment, contracts, legal documents, employees, utilities, taxes, and so much more. You wouldn’t even think twice about having to pay these. It’s just the cost of doing business and of course there are no guarantees. Your small business could easily go belly up in just a few months and leave you thousands of dollars in the red. It’s a pretty common scenario.

That’s why I recommend trying your hand at an online business. You don’t have to invest nearly as much, and you have the possibility of creating an income strictly for you. The thing is, you’re still going to have to invest some money. There is some small overhead, and you need a proper education. You need to learn all there is to know about running an online business. If you wanted to be a doctor, you’d pay to go to medical school, right? You can’t just declare yourself a doctor and start offering examinations! You really can’t treat an online business any differently.

I’ve been in contact with quite a few people who have been in the Success in 30 Days Club and they have all spoken very highly of it. Everyone has also said how EASY it was to get their first website online, even those who describe themselves as “technically challenged.”

I tend to avoid posting flashy screenshots of earnings here at I’ve Tried That. These earnings all come from ONE SINGLE article I wrote OVER TWO YEARS AGO. Yes, you read that correctly. That one single article has been consistently making this kind of money for over two years now. It took me only a few hours to write.

I used a few article marketing training guides at Wealthy Affiliate to help me write a compelling article and learned how to properly promote it and drive traffic to it. This was one of my first “big ideas” and has been a cash cow for me ever since.

This is a screenshot of my Amazon affiliate account for the month of January. All of these earnings come from a deal website that I run. I scour Amazon.com looking for big discounts on items. It takes me about 5 minutes to update each morning and hundreds of people visit it each day looking to save some money. I get paid every time someone clicks on one of the deals I posted then buys ANYTHING at all at Amazon.

The idea for this site came from the Wealthy Affiliate forum. A few members were talking about how to make money with Amazon’s affiliate program. Since I love online shopping and saving money, I decided to create a website to help other people do the same. It’s been a huge hit and it’s one of the easiest ways I’m making money online.

This last screenshot is just a small snippet of my personal Gmail inbox. I recently wrote and released my own guide to sell and it’s been moving quite well. I did a search for all of the payment notifications and you can see the search returned thousands of results.

The guide has been my biggest success thus far and I used a combination of a ton of different Wealthy Affiliate guides to help me write it and promote it. I was also able to get in contact with other Wealthy Affiliate members who had experience selling products and was able to pick their brains and ask questions. These were people who make millions of dollars online each year and they were personally helping ME. Some are free. Some cost money. Some are easy. Some take a while to get going. Some earned me a few dollars. Some earned me thousands. One has actually turned into my full-time job. All are legitimate.

Before we get started, I wanted to point out one basic rule that holds true when it comes to making money online. Generally speaking, the easier the work, the less the pay. I made the point repeatedly last week that if someone is offering you a lot of money for little to no work, it’s almost definitely a scam. Keep this general rule of thumb in mind and you’ll be safe.

“Get Paid To…”

Get Paid To (GPT for short) opportunities are all ways of doing simple, easy things online and making some extra money. Remember my basic rule above? These are easy ways of getting paid, so you aren’t going to get paid a whole lot. The good thing about GPT opportunities are they’re almost always 100% free to get started. You’re rewarded for doing simple things online. It’s not brain surgery. You aren’t paid as such. Make sense?

I’ve tried every opportunity on this list and I’ve been paid by every single one. These are all legitimate ways to make some extra money online. I highly recommend creating an account at every site.

Get Paid to Take Surveys

Yes, there are legitimate survey websites out there. Do NOT listen to sites that guarantee you’ll make thousands of dollars doing surveys. At best, you can expect to pick up a few dollars here and there for voicing your opinion. Surveys rarely pay out more than $5 for 15 minutes of your time. Some companies do reward long-term members with higher paying surveys. It’s an easy way to answer a few questions and make a few dollars.

Surveys account for most of the part-time income I pull in. Don’t underestimate the value of online surveys. They do exist and they do pay.

Surveys are given out via invitation. It’s best to sign up for every site below to maximize your chance at getting invited to take a survey. The following sites are all FREE to join. I’ve received checks from all four companies.

Get Paid to Participate in Short Online Polls

Instant Cash Sweepstakes is a market research business that will reward you for taking part in short online polls. Every poll consists of three questions and takes only a few seconds to complete. The polls are a mix between member created questionnaires and polls created by businesses interested in seeing answers from a specific demographic. You can take part in up to 5 polls every three hours.

At the end of each poll you are awarded tickets, coins, or cash.

• Tickets – Each day there is a $50 raffle and every ticket you have is an entry into the raffle.
• Coins – Coins can be exchanged for entries into a $2 drawing every few hours. The more coins you enter, the better your chances at winning.
• Cash – Cold, hard, cash. Not every poll you take will land you money, but every now and then you’ll get a few cents deposited into your account.

There are three main ways to make actual money with Instant Cash Sweepstakes. The first way is through the daily $50 drawing. Every poll you take wins you a random handful of tickets (Bonus tip: the more consistent you are with your polls, the more tickets and coins you can earn) and at the end of the day the tickets are pooled together and a winner is selected. The easiest way to make money is to just keep taking the polls. You can randomly be selected to win a handful of change at the end of each poll. (Another bonus tip: consistency in your answers will also allow you to take more polls per 3-hour block, so be honest!) The polls are fun and they’re a great way to kill some time during the day if you get bored. You just need to log in and remember to take them!

Get Paid to View Ads

Here are two programs I’ve been using for a while now, ClixSense and YouData. They pay you to look at ads and websites. All you have to do is click on a link, look at a website, wait a few seconds, and you’ll get money deposited into your account. This is probably the easiest way to make money on this list. As you can expect, it doesn’t pay as well as the others, but it’s still a great way to make some extra money in your spare time. ClixSense alone has paid me over $250. Not bad!

If you join Clixsense, I highly recommend upgrading to the Premium Level. This will allow you to view hundreds more ads and will quickly pay for itself. Remember to refer your friends and family. This one allows for referrals 8 levels deep. Start building that downline!

Get Paid to Use a Search Engine

This one is a personal favorite of mine. The company is called SwagBucks and they award you simply for using their search engine. Every time you search, there’s a chance you might win SwagBucks and you can redeem SwagBucks in their marketplace for money, gift certificates, or thousands of other items.

Just think how many times per day you use a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Google.com used to be my home page, but I switched it to Swagbucks after I joined. I’m getting the exact same search results, only now I’m slowly making money by doing so.

I’ve actually received over $500 in gift cards from SwagBucks since joining less than a year ago. Definitely join SwagBucks. Here’s an outdated picture of most of my earnings from SwagBucks so far.

Get Paid to Test Websites

UserTesting.com is hiring regular Internet users, just like you, to test specific websites and record their experiences. You’ll be providing feedback to those website owners and showing them how the average person browses his or her website.

You’ll use their software to record a video of what’s happening on your screen and you’ll be able to narrate your experience. The software will track your mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes and you’ll have to add in spoken comments. It generally takes 15-20 minutes to test a website and you’ll be paid a steady $10 for doing so. This is the best paying opportunity on this list and is definitely the most amount of work. Still, highly recommended.

Get Paid to Do All of the Above

Finally, we have a program called CashCrate. Really, it’s a giant compilation of this list rolled into one program. You can get paid for answering surveys, participating in polls, viewing sponsor ads, shopping etc. Instead of rambling on about the features of this one, you really just need to click through and check out the website yourself.

A ChrisFarrellMembership.com Review — Is it a scam?

Chris Farrell Membership is an introductory training program for beginners looking to learn Internet Marketing. It was created by none-other than Chris Farrell, a good looking English chap with an accompanying accent. The goal of his site is to provide you with the training, tools, and support to build an Internet Marketing business from home.

You can try the program for 7 days for only $4.95. After the first seven days, you will be billed $37.00 every month that you remain a member. This membership fee includes access to every training program he created, unlimited support from the support staff, and unlimited web hosting (usually costs $20 a month by itself!) You really do get your money’s worth here.

Almost all of his training is video-based. Personally, I much rather prefer text-based training. I like being able to learn at my own pace. With videos you have to constantly rewind, pause, and rewatch segments to make sure you understand it all. If you’re a visual learner, this is definitely a course for you.

Chris started his Internet Marketing career late 2007/early 2008 and within less than a year, he was making enough online to comfortably live in Beverly Hills. His training is a collection of tutorials he wrote after finding what works online. It’s very much a “follow in my footsteps” type program. Chris himself is seen around the site frequently answering questions and providing help.

Yeah, but does it work?

Chris teaches tried and true methods of Internet Marketing. These are methods that I personally use on a near daily basis so I know that they DO work. But, I have found a few of his methods outdated and there was little mention to recent developments in the Internet Marketing world. Take the recent Google “Panda” update for example. This was HUGE news to Internet Marketers worldwide, but I was only able to find one mention of it on his entire site. Someone created a forum post about it and received 3 replies. That was it.

His teaching is also very basic. He starts at an absolute beginners level. I’m talking “I-just-know-how-to-browse-the-Internet” level. His videos are VERY easy to follow and Chris does an exceptional job as a teacher.

Is it possible to make money following ONLY Chris’s teaching? Absolutely, 100% yes. But, I do believe you’ll be spending quite a few months trying to do so and will ultimately seek out help from another program. This is where it gets tricky though. Without Chris’s help, you wouldn’t have the basic knowledge required to seek out and learn more. So while you’re not going to get rich from his training, you will need this basic foundation of knowledge to get started. Does that make sense?

What I Liked

Tons of Training

The amount of information readily available to you is astounding, to say the least. There are over 1,000 different training videos and 20+ different training programs to follow. You are absolutely getting your money’s worth when it comes to the quantity of content you receive.

Consistent Updates

The site is updated often. Chris is constantly working on providing his subscribers with more. There are new additions made almost daily and every new feature is included with your membership.

Chris & His Likability

Damn is Chris likable. He has a sincerity about him that is unmatched. It’s hard to put into words. When he speaks, you can tell he’s genuinely interested in helping you build an online business. Above all, he is a great teacher.

It’s quite obvious Chris Farrell isn’t in the business of ripping people off. Immediately after creating your account, Chris provides you with cancellation instructions should you feel the need to leave the program. It’s honestly the first piece of instruction he offers. You don’t have to jump through any hoops, or fight your way out of a contract. Login, cancel your account, and be done with it.

Timely, Quality Support

I was most impressed by the support staff. There is a dedicated support team and they offer round-the-clock help. I’ve been browsing through the forum and nearly every question was answered within a few minutes with a detailed, helpful explanation.

It’s really hard to find such quality support these days. Most programs will try and sell you some sort of “support” add-on package or offer additional coaching at thousands of dollars per month, but not Chris. It’s all included with your membership and well worth the price of the membership alone.

What I Didn’t Like

The Navigation

I really do not like the site’s navigation. It feels very clumsy. It’s like Chris set out to build this grand mansion, but built it one room at a time with little regard to previous rooms he built. There’s no real sense of direction either. There are five different introduction pages all explaining different ways of getting started. The site just doesn’t flow.

A face-lift would do the site wonders as well. Even though it’s updated daily, it feels very outdated. I don’t see this happening any time soon (if ever) since his videos frequently refer to areas around his site. This unfortunately means the site will only continue to fall behind in terms of design.

Chris really just needs to go through and browse the pages of his site. The entire site needs to be proofread. I found plenty of typos, randomly capitalized words, the text ‘click here’ with no links, and plenty of other mistakes. Take this for example. The Discussion Forum

Man, the forum desperately needs better organization and an updated design as well. It is very text heavy. There are literally hundreds of thousands of posts in the ‘Troubleshooting’ sub-forum alone. This could easily be broken up into different categories. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to find a topic you saw a few days ago and wished to read again.

The Positive Reviews

I was drawn to Chris Farrell Membership mainly due to the overwhelming number of positive reviews about the program. This both intrigued and worried me. While Chris doesn’t ever say “Go here and give me a positive review,” he does ask that you leave a testimonial and review the program. Any one this far into the course will have been with Chris for a while and will likely have nothing but nice things to say about the guy and the sheer amount of positive reviews drowns out any legitimate qualms another user may have with the program.

Little Focus on WordPress/CMSs

This is the number one issue I have with training at Chris Farrell Membership. The main focus of his training is teaching beginners how to build static HTML pages pretty much from scratch. In this day and age, that’s entirely unnecessary. There are tools (mainly WordPress) out there that will build complex, easy to update & manage websites for you within seconds. Why bother spending all that time trying to design, build, and manage a website when you can have WordPress do all of that work for you?

There ARE a few training materials on WordPress, but the videos are from 2009. WordPress is entirely different today. The concept is very much the same, but it functions entirely different today. You won’t get any of the benefits of WordPress (plugins, proper SEO, the ability to connect with your readers, instant & easy changes to your site) without a ton of work on your part with a static website.

If you follow Chris Farrell’s program, you will be wasting a lot of time learning basic HTML and trying to build your own website. Hell, the first few days of his 21 Days to Success program are all about learning about different files on your computer and how to resize images. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff here.

The Bottom Line

So, do I recommend you join Chris Farrell Membership?

Well, yes and no. I suppose if I had some sort of rating system on this blog, I’d give Chris Farrell Membership 2.5 thumbsups out of five.

The training isn’t bad, but it’s not exactly great either. Chris Farrell is a fantastic teacher and he’s very knowledgeable on all topics Internet Marketing. With that said, his training is mainly geared toward complete beginners. He teaches older methods of building websites and I just think there are much easier ways of learning Internet Marketing. Experienced Internet Marketers will be bored to tears and likely won’t stay past the 7-day trial.

His training is good if you want to start venturing out into Internet Marketing, but don’t want to commit a whole lot of money up-front. You’ll learn the basics and get a real good grasp on the foundations of Internet Marketing; however, I firmly believe that you will need to move on from Chris’s training to make a substantial income online.
