Test Websites. Get Paid by UserTesting.com.

UserTesting.com is looking for people to test websites and write up reports on them. There’s no cost to join and you WILL get paid for doing work.

UserTesting.com is hiring regular Internet users to test websites and record their experiences. Whoa, there calm down. You won’t get paid to visit ANY website (plus, I’ve seen what you’ve looked at. Are you sure you want to share that with the world?) Instead, you’ll be employed to check out specific websites in order to give feedback to those website owners. You will be showing a website owner how the average person browses his or her website.

You will need to use their software to record a video of what’s happening on your screen. It will track your mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes and you’ll have to add in spoken comments while you browse the website you’re testing. It generally takes 15-20 minutes to test a website and you’ll be paid $10 for doing so.

Here is more information from their employment page.

Position: User Tester

Description

Do usability testing of websites and earn $10 per website.

How It Works

  1. Website owners ask for users to test their site. Whenever your demographic profile matches their target audience, you’re given the opportunity to test their website.
  2. You use our software to record a video of what’s happening on your screen – mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes – and your spoken comments while you use the website you’re testing. (Videos are typically 15 minutes long.) You’ll need a PC running Windows and a fast Internet connection. Watch a sample video.
  3. You answer four questions about your experience. See a sample review.
  4. You’ll earn $10 (paid with PayPal).

Don’t expect this to be a full time job however. Yes, $10 for about 20 minutes of work is great pay, but the folks at UserTesting claim you won’t see more than 10 tests a week. Even then, work is on a first come, first serve basis. You’ll need to act fast to land a job. Appreciate the fact that you’ll be able to pick up a little extra sidecash in your spare time and UserTesting will make a great little addition to your quest to make money from home.

Now, I haven’t been able to try the program myself. I’m looking for some feedback from you guys. Have you tried it? Is it worthwhile or a waste of your time? Please let me know and leave a comment below. Thanks!

I have done around 50 jobs for usertesting and have been very happy with the results. They pay on time; tester support is quick to respond, helpful, and personal, and the work is varied and interesting.

You won’t be an employee. All the jobs are contract jobs. It is true that you won’t see more than 10 jobs a week that you qualify for. Some clients require a specific hardware configuration, age/income level, or browser configuration. Some require you be a parent or a pet owner. There are all kinds of requirements a client can ask for, but you can only do jobs for which you meet them all.

I would name the required skills as follows: able to articulate your thoughts immediately; able to communicate well verbally; able to write reports using correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation; ability to sit around hitting refresh on the page all day in order to make sure you get work. Also, children, if present, must be able to remain quiet and leave you alone while you review.

There is also a certain amount of judgment you will have to exercise; the site recommends you don’t take a job if you don’t think you can complete all the tasks in 15-20 minutes, and if things do not go as expected, you may also have to judge mid-test whether to continue or to report the problem to support.

I am glad to freelance with usertesting and hope to see their business continue to expand.
